What Is Margin on Pionex? How Adding Margin Changes Liquidation Risk

Last updated: August 25, 2026

Margin is the capital that supports a leveraged position. On Pionex, adding margin gives the position more equity to absorb unrealized losses and normally moves the estimated liquidation price farther away. It does not remove liquidation risk, and the extra funds you add also become exposed to loss.

Initial margin, maintenance margin and margin equity

Term Meaning
Initial margin The capital required to open the leveraged position.
Margin equity Margin plus the position’s unrealized profit or loss.
Maintenance margin The minimum margin equity required to keep the position open.
Dynamic margin Additional funds reserved or added to support a Futures Grid position.

What adding margin changes

For a long Futures Grid Bot, adding dynamic margin generally lowers the estimated liquidation price. For a short bot, it generally raises the estimated liquidation price. This creates more distance between the current market and the estimated liquidation level, but it also puts more of your funds into the position.

Pionex says you can open the running bot and select More, Adjust Margin, Add Margin. The added amount supports the position and does not change the bot’s price range, grid count or other configured parameters.

Adding margin is not the only response

Before adding capital, review the position direction, leverage, unrealized loss, Mark Price, maintenance margin and remaining risk budget. Closing or reducing exposure can be a valid risk decision. Do not add funds only to avoid recognizing a losing position.

Frequently asked questions

What is margin on Pionex?

Margin is the capital allocated to support a leveraged futures position or bot. It absorbs unrealized losses and helps determine how close the position is to liquidation.

Is margin the same as position size?

No. Position size is the notional exposure controlled by the trade. Margin is the capital supporting that exposure.

What happens when I add margin to a long Futures Grid Bot?

Adding dynamic margin generally lowers the bot’s estimated liquidation price, giving the long position more room before liquidation. It also increases the amount of your capital exposed.

What happens when I add margin to a short Futures Grid Bot?

Adding dynamic margin generally raises the estimated liquidation price for a short position, creating more distance above the current price. The position can still be liquidated if losses continue.

Does adding margin change my bot settings?

Pionex states that adding margin through Adjust Margin does not change the bot’s configured parameters. The added funds support the position and may be used for applicable fee deductions.

Can adding margin guarantee that liquidation will not happen?

No. It can move the estimated liquidation price, but a sufficiently large adverse move can still liquidate the position. Reducing leverage or exposure may be more appropriate than repeatedly adding funds.
