SpaceX Shares Unlock This Week. Does That Mean SPCX Will Fall?

Pionex SPCX perpetual price chart from May 21 to September 8, 2026, showing a decline from 207.53 to 148.57 USDT.

Around 319 million SpaceX shares are reportedly scheduled to become eligible for trading on September 9, 2026. That does not automatically mean SPCX will fall: shareholders can choose whether to sell, and buyers may absorb the extra supply. If you hold SPCX futures, the question is how much selling arrives and how a move against you would affect your position.

But SpaceX has already been through a bigger unlock this summer. On August 6, when insiders first became eligible to sell, the stock finished the day up 6.1%. The arrival of potential sellers did not stop the price from rising. September unlock reporting, August market reaction

That leaves a more useful question than whether the unlock is “good” or “bad”: how much of the expected selling will actually happen, and what happens to your trade if the price moves against you first?

What is actually being unlocked?

Some employees and early investors have been restricted from selling their SpaceX holdings since the IPO. An unlock lifts those restrictions for an eligible portion of their shares. An employee could sell some to pay a bill or diversify their savings, sell everything they are allowed to, or keep holding.

The shares already exist. SpaceX is not creating another 319 million shares through this event, and that number is not a queue of sell orders waiting to hit the market.

FinanceFeeds puts the September 9 release at approximately 319 million shares, with another, smaller release the following day. Those are reported estimates. SpaceX’s prospectus confirms that certain holdings are released in stages, with different restrictions applying to different shareholders. FinanceFeeds schedule, SpaceX prospectus

The reason traders care is straightforward. If enough holders want to sell at once, buyers may demand a lower price. If selling is modest, or demand is strong enough to absorb it, the stock can hold up. August showed that the second outcome is possible; it did not establish a pattern you can count on repeating.

The headline alone is a weak reason to short

A scheduled unlock is public information. Traders can act on it before the date arrives, which means some of the fear may already be reflected in the price. Selling after reading the headline does not necessarily put you ahead of the market.

The same problem applies to buying simply because August’s unlock ended with a rally. This week’s buyers, sellers and expectations will be different. One previous result is too little evidence for a reliable trading rule.

Watch how the price behaves once trading gets underway. If it falls and keeps struggling to recover while volume builds, that tells you buyers are having difficulty absorbing the selling. If it holds up despite busy trading, the expected supply may be meeting demand. Volume cannot tell you on its own whether the sellers are employees, early investors or ordinary traders.

There is still a business behind the stock, too. Our August SpaceX article looked at the disagreement over its valuation. An unlock changes who can sell; it does not settle what the company is worth.

For a Pionex position, start with what you could lose

SPCX perpetual futures on Pionex were trading at 148.66 USDT at 11:19 UTC on September 8, down about 1.34% over the rolling 24-hour period. Turnover in that window was approximately 2.53 million USDT. These figures come from Pionex’s SPCX_USDT_PERP market, rather than the Nasdaq stock quote.

If you already hold a position, the useful number is the loss a move against you would produce. For illustration, a long futures position worth 1,000 USDT loses about 50 USDT if its price falls 5%, before fees and funding. That calculation uses the position’s full value. It does not use only the margin you deposited.

That is why a trade can look small in your account while carrying a much larger exposure. Check the position value and estimated liquidation price together. Pionex uses mark price for futures-grid liquidation, so the last traded price alone does not show how close a bot is to being liquidated. Pionex Futures Grid documentation

You can check your SPCX market and position on Pionex. If you are new to the product, the SPCX explainer covers why holding this contract does not make you a SpaceX shareholder.

For a running Futures Grid Bot, look at total profit and loss before taking comfort in the grid-profit figure. For example, 20 USDT earned from completed trades does not cover a 70 USDT loss on the open position. You would still be down 50 USDT before any additional costs. Both examples here are illustrations, not forecasts for SPCX.

Funding also affects the cost of waiting. It is a payment between long and short holders, calculated from the position’s value and the funding rate. Check the rate and next settlement time shown for SPCX; a short position does not always receive funding. Pionex funding guide

There is another reason to watch September 10

SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen is scheduled to speak at Goldman Sachs’ technology conference on September 10 at 12:25 p.m. Pacific Time. SpaceX says a webcast and replay will be available. Company announcement

Any fresh detail on Starlink demand or AI spending would be worth reading alongside the unlock news. Those are topics to listen for, rather than a confirmed agenda. A change in business expectations could matter more to the price than the number of shares newly eligible for sale.

If you have no position, you do not have to open one just because shares are becoming eligible for sale. Watching the reaction may give you better information than trying to guess it. If you already hold SPCX, work out whether your position can tolerate an adverse move without depending on a quick recovery. The SPCX trading guide explains the product in more detail.

⚠️ SPCX futures can lose money through adverse price moves, funding costs and liquidation. Bots automate trades; they cannot ensure your position survives a sharp move.
